HOW WE CAME ABOUT

At a public meeting in February 2000, after two years of investigations by the Te Kauwhata Health Awareness Society, a committee of elected persons charged with improving the primary health care of the community, it was resolved to build a Community Fitness Centre.

This Fitness Centre would be added to the facilities at the Te Kauwhata College and would comprise the extension the College gymnasium, resurfacing of the courts with turf and heating the existing 25m swimming pool.

The Te Kauwhata Health Awareness Society was charged with fundraising, design and construction with all the necessary legal requirements of incorporation, registering as a charity and occupation and partnership with the college. Fundraising was ongoing and with some wonderful input from the community the Society was able to raise $1.4 million.

In June 2003 the “Te Kauwhata Community Fitness Centre” officially opened.
